Change where Messenger appears

with one comment

Now that the new Windows 7 RC is out, I think I should write some blog posts on it. One of the more annoying features of Windows Live Messenger + Windows 7 is that Messenger no longer docks in the system tray where it’s supposed to be.

No Messenger!

Instead, it puts itself where all of the other icons are, making the taskbar look more cluttered. Here’s how to fix that.
image
Doesn’t that look a little cluttered and confusing?

First, before you do anything, close down Messenger by mouse-ing over the Messenger icon and pushing the redimagebutton.
image

Then, open the start menu and type in “Windows Live Messenger”, then right-click on “Windows Live Messenger”, and click “Properties”.
image

In the window that pops up, click “Compatibility”, check “Run the program in compatibility mode for:”, click the drop-down box, then click “Windows Vista”. Now you can click “OK”.
image

Now start Windows Live Messenger by clicking the “Start Orb” then type in “Windows Live Messenger”. Click “Windows Live Messenger”.
image

Now you can say good-bye to the taskbar icon! The icon is back in the system tray where it should be.

Enjoy!
P.S. This technique can also

be used for Windows Live Mail and other applications that used to have their icons appear in the system tray.

Updating Messenger and Facebook from Twitter

with 4 comments

If my last post about Twitter and Messenger helped you, this post should be even better. Let’s go over the list of stuff you need. (* = Optional)

_ Windows Live Messenger
_ Messenger Plus!
_ Twit2MSN
_ A Facebook Account*
_ A Public Twitter Account

Let’s start at the Windows Live Messenger end. First, if you haven’t already, go download Messenger Plus! from http://www.msgpluslive.net/ and install it. Then, download and run Twit2MSN(it should install automatically).
After it’s done installing, open messenger, click the image icon, then click ”Scripts Preferences…”
image

Click “Twit2MSN” the click “Edit”
 image

On line 17, replace either “WARlrus” or “twitter” with your Twitter username, then click “Save All”. Then, click “OK”.image

Now for the (optional) Facebook side. First, make sure your Twitter account is public. After you’ve made that change, click this link to install the Facebook Twitter app.

Then, click the “Install Twitter in Facebook” button
image

Then click “Allow”
image

image

Then click the big “Allow Twitter to update your Facebook status” button
image

Make sure your name is selected, then click “Allow Status Updates”
image

Aaannnndddd… Your done! You can now update your Windows Live Messenger and Facebook status from anywhere in the world!

Hopefully in a couple of weeks I’ll write another [fun] way to do this when I can actually do it myself. Enjoy!

Remove ads from Windows Live Messenger

with 2 comments

The ads in Windows Live Messenger can be really annoying, and can be inappropriate. I found some software that can remove ads, and some other stuff.

First, your going to have to close and exit messenger by right-clicking the Messenger icon and clicking “Exit”.
image

After you’ve closed Messenger, you’ll want to download A-Patch from this link(I’m guessing you have WLM 2009. If not, download other versions here).

After you have finished downloading the file, extract it, and run the program.

On the first screen, check the settings you want(I suggest you keep the defaults) , then click “Ok” or “Next”. You will not get this screen again.
image

On the next screen, you’ll see three options. Choose “Patch Messenger,” then click “Next”.
image

On the next screen, check both “Remove Advertisement” boxes. You can also check anything else you would like(the “Remove Nudge Delay” was one of mine). Click “Apply”, and then click “OK” on the window that pops up.image

Wait…
 image

…and you’re done! Click “Exit” to close A-Patch and launch Messenger…without the ads!
image

No ads!

As usual, Enjoy!

Updating Twitter from Messenger

with 3 comments

If you want to save time and update Twitter from messenger, here’s what you will need:

__ Windows Live Messenger 2009

__ Messenger Plus!

__ Twitter PSM Pusher

__ A Twitter account

I recently got a Facebook account, and got tired of updating the status on WLM09 and Facebook separately. I didn’t have the time. So, I searched for a way to update them in one place(well, i guess I DID have the time). That’s when I got Twitter. At the time, I thought Twitter was a status syncing service. Even though Windows Live had just came out with support for twitter, it still didn’t sync Facbebook and Windows Live together. So, I kept on searching. Then I found the answer!

Today, I am going to show you how to update Twitter from your Messenger personal status. First, if you haven’t already, get Windows Live Messenger 2009. After you’ve installed it, download the latest copy of Messenger Plus!, install it, and configure it(the configuration window will automatically pop up). When you’re done configuring, download and install the Twitter PSM Pusher. Now all you need to do is open ANY chat window, type in “/twitterconfig”(do NOT copy it), type in your username and password in the window that pops up, and click “ok.” Now you just need to enter a personal message into the box(it’s right below your name), and push “Enter” on your keyboard. You are done! You can now enjoy the ease of updating your Twitter status right from Messenger(if you also want to update Facebook from Messenger, just install the Twitter add-in for Facebook)!
