Turn your Wii into a Media Center Extender(Well, kinda)

with 8 comments

Getting sick of hooking up cables to your TV from your laptop? Extender not working? Wish you had an Xbox? Have a Wii? I’m in the same boat. It’s not pretty having wires going along walls to the other room into the TV. But, if you have a Wii(or a PS3 for that matter), you can fix that problem. Here’s how.

On the computer side:
Go to http://www.orb.com and download and then install the program.

Read the details if you want to, then click “Next”.

As the screen says, click “Always Allow” or “Always use this action” when your Anti-Virus software prompts you. Click “Next”.

Now you need to create an account. If you already have one, click “Already have an Orb account?”. (Tip: If you have a Winamp Remote account, you’ve already signed up for Orb) Click “Next”.

Read, then click “Next”.

The software will now check your system to see if you can stream media to other devices. Click “Next” when it’s done.

On this screen, it will ask you if you want to stream your media to your TV using game consoles or other devices. Select “Yes,” then click “Next”.

This screen will ask you how your console(s) connect to the Internet. Select your type of connection, then click, you guessed it, “Next”.

Your done! Congrats! You can now click “Close,” and follow the steps below for setting up your Wii.
Note: A browser window may pop up showing you your Orb online media portal at http://mycast.orb.com. Close it.

On the Wii side:
To make the magic happen, you will need the Opera browser for Wii. You can get it in the Wii Shopping channel for 500 Wii Points(5 US Dollars).

Once you’ve got the browser, load it up and click “Enter web address”. Type in mycast.orb.com, and click “OK”.

Enter your username and password, then click “Login”.

And welcome to your new media center! You can now access your TV Tuner, Webcam, Music, Movies, Feeds, and more, right from your Wii!

I recommend adding the Orb MyCast page to your favorites for easier access.

Enjoy!

  1. […] on the other hand, well, at least it has a web browser with flash 7. But, without plugins such as making it a Media Center Extender, or getting Netflix on it, my family would probably never use the Wii so much. But, we do have […]

  2. Hello, I just thought I’d post a comment and inform you that your web site layout is really messed up on the Firefox browser. Seems to work fine on Internet Explorer however. Anyways keep up the good work.

  3. Funny… the “Internet Channel” is free. Or at least, it was free for me (0 wii points). And it includes the Opera browser.

  5. @Pablo – Internet Channel did cost 500 points at one point. Then they made it free as a promotion. Then they made it 500 points again. Now, they have permanently made it free. At the time of this article’s writing, it was during the 500 points time-frame. Also, the Internet Channel IS the Opera browser. It doesn’t “include” it. Unless someone knows of Firefox or Safari for the Wii..

  6. Although this setup mostly works, the quality of the compression is so abysmal that I wouldn’t consider it for my primary entertainment setup. I don’t need HD (and could never get it from a Wii, anyway), but I’d at least like to not lose quality on an SD stream.

Also, Orb doesn’t seem to recognize a Video_TS folder properly, probably a limitation of the web interface, so if you’re looking for the ability to rip a DVD to your hard drive and enjoy it as a DVD you’re out of luck. You can at least tell it to “play all” or set up a playlist for a DVD, but there’s no way to browse the menus to select special features.

  7. I’m really enjoying the design and layout of your website. It’s a very easy on the eyes which makes it much more enjoyable for me to come here and visit more often.

Did you hire out a designer to create your theme?
    Outstanding work!
